Packing Slips
A packing slip is a shipping document that travels with your freight to detail the contents of the shipment. It may go by many names — shipping list, packing slip, waybill, delivery list, etc. — and is either packed within the shipment or in a designated pouch for easier access.
Best Practices for Packing Slips
Organized and easy-to-read packing slips simplify the shipping and receiving process. They vary according to the industry and shipment, but most follow a specific format. They should be easy to find in the shipment, easy to read and kept to as few sheets of paper as possible.
Packing slips should include:
- Your company’s name and full contact information
- include a telephone number and email address in case of questions or problems
- The order date
- The customer’s name and address
- The items ordered
- The items included in the shipment and those that may ship separately
- The quantity of items
Choose a font with text that’s large enough to read easily.
Packing Slip Template
A packing slip template is a blank form that helps you generate packing slips quickly and easily. You can make your own template or use the packing slip template tool provided.
If you use a point of sale system (POS) for your business, make sure that your system merges with the software used to create your template. While smaller or infrequent orders can be easily typed into a packing slip template, automating the process makes it easier for bulk or frequent orders.
Where to Include a Packing Slip
The best place for a packing slip form is folded and sealed inside a clear plastic pouch affixed to the outside of a shipping carton. This allows easy access for all parties, and ensures it doesn’t get lost in packing materials or smaller items.
